Best Friends

Best Friends Workshop

'This is a film about a girl who is dyslexic. Sasha is 9 years old and she gets bullied in school. Sasha's mum and her teacher don't really understand her problems. Sasha would be very lonely if it weren't for her two best friends Angelica and Christina.' This film aims to raise awareness about dyslexia. Some of the young filmmakers in this project are dyslexic and we worked with them in Betws Primary School to share their experiences, write the script and produce this film:
Best Friends Workshop"We all worked very hard to make this film - it was a real team effort"
(Sarah, 9 years old)
"It is important for other people to understand what it is like to be dyslexic"
(Megan, 9 years old)

"I had fun making this film, especially using the camera" (Thomas, aged 9)

"I liked the magical bits of the film best. This is how it should be, we should help each other and not bully each other."  (Olivia, 9 years old)

"I know what it is like to get bullied. I try to stick up for people who get bullied but then they turn on you."  (Kallem aged 8)

"I know exactly what Sasha is going through" (Ashleigh, 9 years old).

You can find out more about dyslexia on the bbc news website.

KPC

In 2006 we started a new film project, working with young people at KPC Youth Centre in Pyle near Bridgend and exploring issues around being homeless. We hope to develop this work further in the future, working with young people and promoting more awareness about homelessness and related issues.

'The Art of Change'

'The Art of Change' project aimed to:

  • increase the availability of Community Arts opportunities to new clients and groups
  • increase creative opportunities in disadvantaged communities
  • increase creative opportunities for young people
  • promote equal opportunities through Community Arts
  • increase opportunities for Community Artists (i.e. through training and the pilot course)
  • build new development opportunities for Valley and Vale Community Arts into the future, based on the new clients, partners and opportunities created as part of The Art of Change project
  • stimulate and develop the Community Arts sector infrastructure
  • create new partnerships between the arts and new sectors (eg health, sport, disability, probation, education, social regeneration programmes such as Communities First, mental health, etc)

Our World - Our Journeys

Our World video coverThis film was made by young asylum seekers living in Cardiff and working with our Film Development Worker Katja Stiller and our Drama Development Worker Ali Franks. This project aimed to encourage dialogue, promote cultural diversity and offer a creative outlet for the young people. Supported by the British Council, Wales, and the Welsh Assembly Government we have also created a resource pack to accompany this film.

The 'Our World - Our Journeys' awareness-raising resource pack (film and booklet) was launched in April 2006 in Newport, in partnership with the British Council and the Wales Assembly Government. This pack was made with young asylum seekers in Cardiff and the launch event was a great success, with speakers, dance and rapping performances and creative workshops with local young people using Community Arts to explore some of the issues in the resource pack such as identity, diversity and multicultural awareness. Thanks to Katja Stiller, our Film Development Worker, for organising the event, to our great facilitation team that worked hard on the day, to the British Council and the Wales Assembly Government for their support and to everyone that took part that made the day such a success.

Our World LaunchThe film Our World - Our Journeys (to watch a clip click here) was also screened at the EU Global Education seminar in April 2006 and was very well received.

Feedback included "this project and resource pack is an excellent example of how to facilitate young people's views to be heard".
